-curious if the defiant's redesign will be mirror universe modifications (likely) or a reimagining of the entire class (possible, wouldn't be opposed).

-i've seen some grumbling about the terran empire logo redesign. i'm not bothered by it. as i've said before, i expect some setting reimagination over the life of a legendarium with the introduction of new production techniques, people, and ideas. retcon it in your head.

One of my favourite moments in the wild-ass ride that is #Sense8 is Nomi and Amanita's mutual marriage proposal in the season 2 finale. It's a joyously sweet moment of queer-as-in-fuck-you love that I doubt a TV writer could have imagined inserting into a script even five years ago. When patriarchal notions of relationship structure are dumped, beautiful things can unfold.

ok, goodness fuckbeans, that episode was the fucked-up callout post/love letter to star trek we've needed, wrapped in a story about toxic techbro culture, with maaaaaaybe a small nod to snow crash at the end. i would totally watch a series built around capt. cole's crew run by brooker and michaela cole. i'm sitting here slack-jawed. there's so much going on and it all somehow *works*, as damn near perfectly as i could've imagined.

The wild part is that this episode works perfectly as a fucked-up Star Trek holodeck episode. I'm loving this. It's so dead-on it hurts.

That's not to say I haven't often enjoyed the ever-loving shit out of the current takes on the #StarTrek and #StarWars legendariums, and I know space opera is as soft as sci-fi often gets, but completely dispensing with Einsteinian limits on electromagnetic propagation and compressing distances eliminates the sense of sweeping vastness that underpins space opera's drama and worldbuilding.

Abrams-influenced takes on #StarWars and #StarTrek ignore those limitations, and as a result greatly reduce the scale of space. In ST, the destruction of Vulcan is visible in real time from a planet in another system. The heroes in TFA watch Starkiller destroy Hosnian Prime from Maz's world. In ST:D, Sarek reports the Beacon of Kahless being instantly visible in Vulcan's sky. In TLJ, Crait is curiously reachable from "literally nowhere"

There is an aspect of Abrams-influenced space opera that has bothered me since the #StarTrek reboot. I've noticed it again in Abrams Wars, and I finally know how to describe it.

Prior space opera has generally respected the speed of light and acknowledged the vast distances between stars. Countless fantastical means have been conceived to circumvent those limits, but without them, special relativity applies to information propagation.

this stuff is labelled "power breakfast". it's an english breakfast #tea blend with yerba mate, which i'd never heard of until i bought it a couple weeks ago.

the scent and flavour is somewhat reminiscent of the burnt-rubbery industrial scent of a garage. as this invokes memories of rare mondays tagging along with my dad to maintenance and meetings at the fire hall, this is actually a positive. also, the caffeine hit is good.

It's looking like a 3-cuppa day around here.

I could watch more Stranger Things 2; D❤️'s bored of it. Or, I could watch something entirely different. I haven't finished American Gods yet...

No new ST:D tonight. what am I gonna fill the 10-11pm hour with? Giving up on Enterprise. Tried starting from season 3, but the characters are inescapably bland, and the sense of constraint imposed by previous series is palpable. i like how D has flatly ignored old production constraints and updated the look of many things, Klingons included. I like to think of it as a new take on an existing saga; if Batman and LOTR can be redone while maintaining the underlying legendarium, why not ST?

looked at my still-not-deleted birdsite account to see what kind of trouble some friends were up to. still looks like an abyss of rage and despair.
