I swear, seeing people’s reactions to certain storylines in recent books and movies: some of y’all didn’t grow up in cults and it shows
And not in a good way
Escape isn’t easy, it isn’t linear, and the mind games stick with us long after we’ve left the physical space
“She should’ve seen what was wrong a lot sooner!”
She was a CHILD when she was indoctrinated. Her brain was shaped by these lies and stories. It takes years to undo that.
“But she got out, why is she acting like that?!?”
Because getting the body out is one thing, rewiring the brain is another
“Why is she acting so WEIRD?”
Because child emotional abuse & neglect just does that to people, ok?
I have two very different pieces of media in mind as I write this, and it’s relevant to even more
Anyway, the point of this mini-rant is that a lot of your neighbors and co-workers are in various high-control (especially thought-control!) groups right now, both formal and informal
And if you don’t learn at least a little bit about what an invisible prison that is, you are going to continue to be blindsided by those neighbors acting seemingly completely contrary to all sense
@Violinknitter My favorite learning around high control groups is that nobody goes looking for a cult. They are looking for companionship, life meaning, self improvement, etc. That really helped me let go of some shame when I realized that.
@jkirkendall Yes! Or survival, or healing, or love
