Crazy English/American units

The word "furlong" comes from Old English "furh", meaning "furrow", and "lang", meaning "long'. It literally means a furrow's length. It's the distance a team of oxen could pull a plow through soil without resting. This was important because it's a PITA to turn a team of oxen around when they're pulling a plow, so a plot of land shorter than this would not be very useful.

Unsafe bottled water in news, pet & human illness

I remember seeing this brand of bottled water a couple of years ago. The marketing-speak on the box really set off my BS detector."Beyond alkalinity! We add negative ions!"

So I shouldn't be surprised they ended up putting someone unqualified in charge of the process, *not training him*, and making the stuff actively poisonous. (Though the article doesn't indicate what caused the cases of liver damage.)

Maybe we just put solar panels on roombas and set them free?

Huh, Verizon has sold Yahoo and AOL.

theverge.com/2021/5/3/22416854

For half of what they paid for them. 🤦‍♂️

To a private equity firm. 😬

Flickr and Tumblr REALLY lucked out that Verizon put in the effort to look for a photo-sharing company and a blogging company to sell them to instead of just muddling along with no idea what to do with them until they just wanted to unload them.

Before you stand two trolleys, one never lies and the other contains a goat. Maxwell's demon asks if you'd like to switch trolleys

But yeah, Mozilla Coffee was briefly a thing, back in 2003-2004. It wasn't a run by Mozilla, it was someone who had a mail-order coffee business who branded some of it and donated half the profits to the Mozilla Foundation.

When I write something new on my gemlog or import an older blog entry, sometimes I'll also import related posts so I can link within the capsule instead of out to the web.

I was importing a post on how functional memorabilia is both irreplaceable and easily replaceable depending on how you look at it, and it mentioned my mug - which I still have.

Dear #WebDevelopers, if you need a #cookiePolicy settings page, can you please make sure your fucking #cookieBanner isn't visible on the actual cookie policy settings page?

Or at the very least make sure it doesn't fucking obscure the options?

In other words, don't be like the fucking idiots who designed #gfycat.

To be more precise, they're actually labeled FFS, which of course is another thing entirely

I wondered if someone could help me by boosting my toot. I'm trying to find software that will work on Windows 10 for drawing using the pen that comes with my Dell laptop. I honestly don't know anything about the subject, so when I try to search on the internet, I'm not getting what I am looking for.

Also available through the web here: gemini.nytpu.com/why-gemini.gm

Also, thanks to the following people for giving me awesome responses to my rather vague question: @furtivo @solene

Probably a Cooper's Hawk, also spotted on the same walk this afternoon. It flew up to a telephone pole, alighted there for a few seconds, and as I was trying to line up a shot with the camera, it took off again, then flew a few houses down the street to perch in this tree.

Host fixed their routing so my Nextcloud instance is reachable again and I don't need to move it immediately. But this isn't the first time this has happened, and I'm really starting to think hosting it at home is the way to go. Eventually.

If your tutorial for setting up your service is going to involve #Docker, then please mention that requirement up front.

So I don't have to waste reading half of the article, and can just move on right away to an alternative solution instead.

I've updated the Gempub support in Lagrange's dev branch. The new split modes are also pretty handy here... @nytpu @oppen

I understand why old people fall for scams

I'm looking at legit emails from people that I hired to help me with my taxes

They got my name wrong and everything about it looks sketchy as fuck

If this is what the legit tax people look like, of course it's hard to tell them from scammers

(a) would be simplest, but I'll just have to deal with this again. (b) would involve researching other providers. (c) would mean figuring out what kind of storage I want to use & figuring out how best to mitigate the risk of allowing external access to a machine on the home network. I mean, yeah, I'm mostly at home these days anyway, but I'm kind of hoping that will change soon!
