This is why you talk to coworkers about pay

Just spoke to my coworker who has been working for the state for over a decade and found out that I make more money than they do by a significant margin. I have not been in this position for even a year yet. Benefit is we have a union and they now get to have a conversation to get paid what they are worth. Don't let companies tell you not to talk about compensation. That allows them to get away with taking advantage of people.

@Haphazard reason's I'm hesitant to: I'm scared I'm being underpayed and don't want to have to do something about it.

@LovesTha understandable. But that is the exact reason it is important to have the conversation. Maybe it causes a person to pursue change to get what they are worth, maybe it pushes them to another job that pays better. Maybe they do nothing but become aware of it for use in the future. All of which are a result that they are better informed about their pay.
