Elizabeth Fitzgerald @Elizabeth_Fitz

This is your friendly reminder to back up your computer.

(No disasters here, just routine)

@Elizabeth_Fitz thank you so much, apparently my automatic backups had been turned off since last july. I would have been so upset.

@archangelic Oh, I'm so glad the reminder was helpful. It would have been very alarming to lose so much!

@Elizabeth_Fitz Between you and my laptop nagging me that it hasn't been backed up in 400+ days... :thisisfine:

(My old backup drive died. I've been meaning to get a replacement but... ugh. Money.)

@alis Ugh, money. But given it has been more than a year (and a half?), a temporary solution might be wise.

@Elizabeth_Fitz Heh. The real problem is my old drive was USB, but I never use my laptop at my desk any more, so want something network-based. Except all wifi drives are shitty and full of "cloud" vendor crapware and, aurgh! Why can't consumer-grade tech just not suck? >_<

@Elizabeth_Fitz
There's a phrase that comes to mind.
"There are those who have experienced traumatic data loss, and there are those who back up."
Thanks for the friendly reminder.

@unwary @Elizabeth_Fitz True, and there are those who now backup daily because they once didn’t frequently enough & suffered traumatic data loss (don’t ask me about March of ‘95)

@Elizabeth_Fitz Oh right, yesterday was International Backup Day!

It's a good day to not only perform backups, but also check that your backups *work*. Pick a random file that should be in there, and make sure you can retrieve it.

(Also, what encryption keys and passwords are required to get in there, if any? Do you have them entrusted to friends, lawyers, and/or safe deposit boxes as appropriate?)
