Having a slow day at work and reading about the history of people thinking they can square the circle

@DialMforMara I thought @Kyresti might find this interesting, given their similar interests to me

@Jmaurer @DialMforMara I've seen that one before and forget what it is now

@Jmaurer @DialMforMara since I was wondering the same thing, Wikipedia defines squaring the circle as:
“Squaring the circle is a problem proposed by ancient geometers. It is the challenge of constructing a square with the same area as a given circle by using only a finite number of steps with compass and straightedge”

Apparently it was proven to be impossible in 1882 but people have been claiming they’ve solved it ever since, usually by doing terrible things like redefining pi

@Satsuma @DialMforMara thank you for that. When I looked I just got information on logos and I wasn't going to do a deep dive into possibly questionable webspace to find out more.

@Jmaurer @DialMforMara haha yeah I know the feeling! Fortunately wikipedia came through this time without me having to visit any actual conspiracy sites

@Satsuma @Jmaurer you'd be surprised how much mathematicians care about updating Wikipedia
