I just finished The Best of All Possible Worlds by Karen Lord and immediately felt the urge to read it again.
It's a travelogue about a scientific/diplomatic mission across a culturally diverse planet, with the goal of finding people who are the same species as the latest group of refugees to arrive onworld. Little tropey, little bit of spacetime woo, but it's also got discussions of the ethics of telepathy and a slow burn m/f romance that I am incredibly there for.

It's been in my list for a while but all the recommendations I'd see were green flags (so surely SOMETHING would be good, right?) rather than specific interest areas of mine. This is very helpful!
